Course Description:

This course is intended to give students the skills to meet the needs of those embarking on a career in Acoustics. This course will provide awareness of noise and its generation. This course will also provide hands-on experience with use of relevant instrumentation in laboratory classes, and develop students' written communication and research skills. Lecture material and tutorial exercises have been carefully selected and a wide range of assessment activities are given. Invited industry acoustic consultants give guest lectures to demonstrate the relevance of acoustics and noise in a range of applications.A brief description of the course contents is as follows:Development of the acoustic plane wave equation, introduction of concepts of acoustic impedance, characteristic impedance, acoustic energy density, acoustic intensity and acoustic power. Measurement of sound pressure. Decibel scales. Transmission of plane waves between different media, through walls and along pipes. The analysis of expansion chamber mufflers and pipe side-branches. Basic energy approach to room acoustics. The effect of noise on people. Occupational noise management. Performance of hearing protectors. Equivalent continuous sound levels, sound exposure levels, and percentile exceeded sound levels for different noise events. Determination of sound power of a source.
