The Victorian Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019 commenced on 1 July 2021. This Act requires professional engineers to be registered with the Business Licensing Authority (BLA) to provide professional engineering services in a prescribed area of engineering in Victoria, or from a location outside Victoria, if the services are intended for Victoria.
The registration scheme includes acoustic engineering as a sub-discipline of mechanical engineering, for which registration will become mandatory on 1 December 2023. If you work in the building industry you may need to be registered now. Information on the registration scheme is available from the Consumer Affairs Victoria website (www.consumer.vic.gov.au/licensing-and-registration/professional-engineers).
The steps to apply for registration and endorsement are also detailed on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website (www.consumer.vic.gov.au/engineersapplication).
The first step is to apply to have your qualifications and experience or competencies assessed by an approved assessment entity, listed in the public record of assessment entities (www.consumer.vic.gov.au/licensing-and-registration/professional-engineers/public-record-of-assessment-entities).
The Victoria Division of the Australian Acoustical Society has invited the two assessment entities whose areas of engineering approved for assessment include mechanical engineering, Engineers Australia and Professionals Australia, to present their assessment schemes.
The first presentation will be on Tuesday 12 October. Zoe Williamson, Engineer Assessment Engagement Co-ordinator - Vic, will present Professionals Australia’s assessment scheme as an assessment entity for the BLA. Information on this scheme is available from the RPEng website (www.rpeng.org.au/), which also includes by-laws and guidelines (www.rpeng.org.au/documents/RPENG/
A second presentation will be held on 26 October, during which Engineers Australia will present their assessment scheme (engineersaustralia.org.au/engineering-registers/statutory-registration). You can register to this second meeting via its event page.
